Back of the Moon are a young band already making waves on the Scottish folk scene. Combining both songs and sets of tunes this four piece glows with youthful enthusiasm and raw talent. Gillian Frame (fiddle, vocals), is one of Scotlands finest young musicians having scooped the Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001 award. Beside her are Simon McKerrell (pipes, vocals) part of the new wave of innovative piping and the Napier brothers, Hamish (piano, vocals) who along with Findlay (guitar, vocals) provide a muscular rhythm section.

How the band got together...

Back of the Moon was the brainchild of Gillian Frame. She was keen to enter the BBC 2 Young Folk Awards, and having played informally with both Simon and Hamish this seemed like the perfect combination.

Simon McKerrell, who had also been flirting with the idea of playing in a folk group, was the obvious choice being both a skilled piper and singer.

The only thing the pair required was accompaniment, this came in the form of ex-skoosh member and multi-instrumentalist Hamish Napier.

With a summer of solid playing and rehearsing the band worked up a repertiore of songs and tunes. They were shortlisted for the finals of the BBC 2 Young Folk Awards and performed creditably unfortunately pipped at the post by Black Cat Theory.

The future of Back of the Moon

Currently the band is working towards a Canadian tour in July and will be appearing at a number of folk festivals including Vancouver and Winnipeg, which was the result of Gillan's success at the YSTM 2001. The band will be playing as the Gillian Frame Band and performing an altered set to encompass Gillian's forthcoming solo album. (see link to Tartan Tapes)

In the meantime and throughout the summer, Back of the Moon intends to play at many of the local folk clubs and festivals throughout Scotland and has already been booked for the Arran Folk Festival. (see Forthcoming Events Page)
